Mike Greyling started the GMD Nguni stud in the Ermelo district in 1991. The herd is well established on the eastern escarpment of the Highveld, on sourveld grazing. The weather conditions here are typical to the Highveld, with mild summers and bitterly cold winters.
Most of the original herd originates from the Makatini flats and is supplemented with highly selected Swazi, Zulu and other bloodlines.
Selection is based on breed purity and favours animals of small to medium frame, of good constitution, with hardy and fertile characteristics. The animals are functionally efficient and adapted to their environment, which ensures their economic sustainability.
Only bulls which have been bred from the bloodline which display the above characteristics, are used for breeding in the herd again.
Some of these choice, highly sought-after animals are offered for sale on the annual Highveld and Natal club auctions and bulls are offered for sale on the Eastern Free State Veldbull club auction.
